Our Club

Melbourne University Rugby Football Club (MURFC), the oldest rugby club in Victoria, is a Foundation Club of the Victorian Rugby Union, participating in the top-tier Victorian Premier Division since 1909. MURFC is the only Foundation Club to remain continuously in the Victorian Premier Division since its inception.

We boast teams in all 4 divisions:

Dewar Shield (Mens Premier Competition) - 1st XV, 2nd XV, 3rd XV

Lindroth Cup (Womens Premier Competition) - 1st XV

Bolton Cup (Colts/U20s Men) &

Masters team aka "Gents" (Over 35)

MURFC fields a strong contingent of local and international players, with Ireland, England, Wales, Scotland, France, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands strongly represented.

Facilities:

 

Our club is located in the newly redeveloped Brens Pavilion, overlooking the H.G. Smith Oval in Parkville.

​

Located between the Melbourne Zoo, Ikon Park (Carlton Football Club home ground), Princes Park and Royal Park, we are located in the prestigious Parkville area. University of Melbourne, College Crescent and Lygon Street Precinct are located a short walk away.​

​

Teams play on Smith Oval (main oval) and Walker Street Oval West (secondary oval).

​

Our fully renovated Brens Pavilion boasts:

  • eight gender neutral, accessible change rooms (including toilet and shower facilities)

  • two umpire change rooms

  • a first aid room with ice dispenser machine and

  • improvements to the existing kitchen and social spaces

Our beloved nickname is "The Students", through our link to the university and history of student athletes and academics involved in the club.

We continue to maintain close ties with the University. We are privileged to share some facilities with the university, allowing use of the Athletic Facilities, Gym & Swimming Pool facilities and strength and conditioning resources.
